It is with deep sorrow that we announce the sudden passing of our founder, colleague, friend, and mentor Prof. Emeritus Nils Wahlgen. Nils meant an extraordinary amount to all of us at SITS. It is because of his vision and dedication that we are able today to work with something truly meaningful.
We remember him with laughter, warmth, and joy, and with great pride in all that he accomplished during his lifetime. Our thoughts are especially with his family, whom we came to know through his vivid and loving stories. We extend our heartfelt condolences to them during this difficult time.
Many of us at SITS, Karolinska Institutet, and Karolinska University Hospital shared long and close relationships with Nils. One of them is our Chair, Niaz Ahmed.

The news of Nils’s passing reached me while I was on vacation and came as a profound shock. Nils was my supervisor at the beginning of my career and later became both a mentor and a close friend. Over the years, he became like an elder brother. His guidance, wisdom, and generosity shaped my professional path. My thoughts are also with his family, and I extend my deepest condolences to them during this extremely difficult time.
